Women married to Italian men before April 27, 1983 acquired Italian citizenship automatically. This rule applies only to women who married Italian citizens before April 21, 1983 and not to men who married an Italian woman.
This case follows a simplified procedure and the application is processed directly by the consulate, not by the Ministry of Interior in Rome, which handles exclusively “regular applications through marriage” (couples married after April 27, 1983).
Since citizenship was technically passed automatically onto the spouse, the consulate will simply verify if the requirements are met and grant citizenship retroactively.
The only documents required are the following:
a. application for citizenship, with a copy of passport and driver license
b. birth certificate (long form) with Apostille and translation
c. affidavit of no divorce/separation
